I would like to visualize glances towards AOIs but the glance timeline is empty.

Glances have to be calculated first before they can be displayed in the glance timeline. Go to Analyse > Data Analysis > AOI Management. Select the AOIs towards which you would like to calculate glances, select either the entire study or current data session and hit Calculate Glances. You should now see the glances on the glance timeline.
